JAPANESE SPEC HOME

The Spec home designed for an urban lot in Japan is inspired by the principles that Mr. Wright used for the design of Usonian homes in America, in the 1940’s. This particular plan addresses the needs of the 21st century. As the lot area is restricted in size, every square inch of space is put to good use. Privacy is a major concern and is addressed in the design solution.

The house design is based on a horizontal and vertical unit system. The back of the house faces the nearest the neighbors to ensure privacy. The front of the house is close to the street to reduce cost of a driveway, which doubles as a parking space for cars and is adjacent to the small garden. The Kitchen is centrally located so that the cook can interact with the rest of the household. There is no formal dining room. Narrow corridors double up as storage space. Bedrooms are small with built-in furniture. L-shape of the house is simple to add rooms to based on the family’s needs.
